Celeb Tweetup: Memorial Day Mishaps

Posted by Drew Grant on May 31st, 2010

Hope you all had a great long weekend. This day, meant to honor those who have served our country, had the additional benefit of  giving celebrities a full 24 hours extra to act insane in. Hooray?

Common mistake: “Closing Time” is actually by Semisonic, Amanda Bynes (@chicky). Don’t feel bad, I only know that because it was my prom theme.

MC Hammer (@MCHammer) will now be giving you your daily traffic reports.

We thought Lindsay Lohan’s (@lindsaylohan) only whored herself out like this for True Blood?

See, Justin Bieber (@justinbieber), this is how the riots start.

Dude Diary: Chad Duell Opens Up About ‘General Hospital,’ Hating High School and Worshipping Tom Cruise

Posted by Erin Carlson on May 31st, 2010

General Hospital’s Chad Duell says he’d be nowhere without Tom Cruise, his acting idol and inspiration.

“He’s the reason I’m doing what I’m doing,” Chad tells Crushable during a break between filming scenes on the ABC soap opera. And if he had to work with anyone in the business, “It would be him.”

Chad — who joined General Hospital in April following stints on The Suite Life On Deck and Wizards Of Waverly Place — caught the acting bug as a high-school freshman in Arizona. He quit the football team and got into theater after watching Tom’s interviews and commentary on the DVD for Vanilla Sky, Cameron Crowe’s 2001 sci-fi thriller featuring the movie star.

“High school was horrible for me,” says Chad, who says he was mocked for being into drama. Otherwise, he floated in between the preppies, skater-punks and theater kids but belonged to no set group. “I got to a point where I wanted to be by myself. I’m kind of a loner. I don’t like to go to parties.”

Chad says he prefers the company of few people, including his girlfriend (who he’s known since he was a high-school sophomore) and his best guy friend (who he’s been tight with since seventh grade); a self-described “strange person,” Chad feels free to be his “weird and goofy” self around them. In contrast, he has no love for the Arizona peers who didn’t accept his arty side. “You have no idea how much flak I got,” he says. “Jealous, arrogant, dumb people.”

He left all that behind when he moved to Los Angeles and enrolled at the New York Film Academy after taking out a student loan (“I don’t come from remotely any wealth,” he says). He soon landed a manager, agent and auditions; then came bit parts in Suite Life On Deck (“I feel like I didn’t do that great on the show since I was nervous”) and Wizards, where he felt more comfortable and goofed around on the set with star Selena Gomez.

Just weeks ago, he entered the realm of General Hospital and the fictional town of Port Charles, where James Franco is renewing his second stint June 30. (Performance art? Don’t question it! It’s Franco! Who knows what’s goes on in that head of his). Chad took over the role of Michael Corinthos III from actor Drew Garrett; he had previously auditioned for the role but Drew won it in April 2009. Chad got the part when Drew’s contract expired, and producers then scrapped a new character they had developed for him. (Instead of Michael, he would’ve been a love interest for Kristina Corinthos Davis, who is Michael’s sister.)

Michael — adopted son of mob boss Sonny Corinthos (Maurice Benard) — is currently in prison after being sentenced five years for the murder of Claudia Zacchara, whom he bludgeoned to death with an axe.

“He’s a tough kid,” says Chad. “He doesn’t want to be in the mob. If you’re ever a kid .. . in jail with scary people around you, you’re gonna be a freaked-out shell of a kid. … I like showing more sides to him. I want (to show) his heart more than his anger. I don’t want him to be one way.”

Chad — who loves disappearing into different characters — says he and Michael are similar in that they both love their families. But while Michael tends to anger easily, “I let things kind of simmer until I blow up,” he adds.

Besides acting, Chad loves giving advice and being a sounding board for friends’ issues (especially relationship stuff).

“I like when people come to me with their problems,” he says. “I like to try to help them make sense out of it.”

Happy Memorial Day everyone! Celebrities are doing pretty much the same things we are this weekend: catching some rays (and Z’s), hitting the Farmer’s Market (or the grocery store, whatevs) and spending quality time with significant others (or anonymous male companions, like Halle Berry). Here’s Rachel Bilson, Maddox Jolie-Pitt, Jennifer Garner and others in weekend mode. Meanwhile, Kristen Stewart and Taylor Lautner sorta had to work.

  • Rachel Bilson en route to dinner flashing a festive belt.
  • Maddox at the beach! He looks pissed.
  • Jennifer Garner takes Violet and Seraphina and some mystery woman to the Farmers Market. Sidenote, that cart looks awesome -- we want to go for a ride in it!
  • Jen Garner with a houseplant.
  • Miley Cyrus sported a tough-hippie look in Spain.
  • Whitney Port and bf Ben Nemtin strolling in NYC. The paps just HAPPENED to be there. Funny, that.
  • Gwen Stefani in breezy harem pants accessorizing with her child.

  • That pitch to Chanel must not have worked! Lindsay Lohan was partying — OK, sober — at a friend’s house this weekend, wearing boots to shroud her SCRAM. (Radar)
  • SHUT UP! Celine Dion is pregnant with twins after turning to in-vitro and acupuncture. Happy news. (People)
  • Forget rumors of rivalry. Brooklyn Decker — yeah, Andy Roddick’s wife — says Jennifer Aniston gave her a “big hug” on the set of Just Go With It. (Us Weekly)
  • Michael Jackson’s three kids will get $33 million each, according to MJ’s will. (Perez Hilton)
  • Bethenny Frankel tried to sell pics of her new baby Bryn to the celebrity magazines, but no one wanted to pay for them. Times are tough! At this point the magazines will pay for Brangelina baby shots and that’s about it. (Page Six)
  • LeAnn Rimes is trying to silence Eddie Cibrian’s pissed-off wife. Legal action has been taken! (DListed)
  • Seraphina Affleck is just as adorbs as Violet — those Affleck kids seem normal and well-adjusted, like the ‘rents. (Just Jared)
  • What’s up with James Franco these days? He’s been hanging out on stoops in our ‘hood. (Popeater)

Remember life before you were hot? — This awesome new blog does, and it has pictures of former fashion victims in Limited Too flannels and green braces elastics. We had all that shit! Except we chose clear rubber bands for our braces. Never a good idea. (via Before You Were Hot)

Dr. Jeff Gardere Takes Deadbeat Boyfriends To Vh1’s ‘Dad Camp’

Posted by Erin Carlson on May 30th, 2010

After the wild success of MTV’s 16 and Pregnant, featuring Dr. Drew and a host of teen moms (and their often-losery boyfriends), a new series premiering Monday on Vh1 is turning the tables on those said losery boyfriends.

The title: Dad Camp. The secret weapon: Dr. Jeff Gardere.

Dr. Jeff, who recently gave us post-nervous breakdown advice for Kelly Bensimon, is a longtime psychologist committed to helping the show’s six young couples — unwed and expecting babies — deal with the guys’ ambivalence about fatherhood. Over 30 days in Dad Camp, Dr. Jeff forces the clueless, immature men to work through their issues and grasp the importance of being a good father and partner to their girlfriends.

“I took a psychological belt and pulled their pants down,” Dr. Jeff tells Crushable. “I did not realize these guys had so many emotional conflicts. … It was insane. A lot of screaming, a lot of yelling, a lot of drama.”

Challenges involve everything from learning how to hold a baby to walking around with a fake baby bump to individual therapy and couples’ counseling. In many cases, the guys had been repeating the mistakes of their fathers in  a vicious cycle. They had been “ho-ing around, drinking, drugging,” says Dr. Jeff. “Their women were fed up, ready to dump the guys before the baby was born.”

At the end of the show, the girlfriends must decide whether to stay together or raise the child alone.

Does this make Dr. Jeff the new Dr. Drew?

“He is an incredible psychiatrist and I think he has set the templates for interventions on reality TV,” he says of the ubiquitous TV shrink (16 And Pregnant, Celebrity Rehab, Loveline). “He’s much better looking than I am — and taller too! However, I am more in your face — street therapy, scrapper, take no prisoners.”

Says Dr. Jeff: “I cried with these guys, I laughed with these guys. … I was embedded. It’s not about celebrity rehab here. This is what happens to kids every single day.”
